I fell in love with this Hibiscus bush one day at a local park. The back-lit flowers were so striking, the rich color glow just a knockout. I tried to show that glow through less focus on details and more focus on the vibrancy of the light. Sometimes you just need to put down the brushes, stand back and say, yeah, it's done.

Early one morning I spotted this tiny, tiny rose not more than one inch across in the garden outside our building. I thought I'd have a little fun with macro photography of it, kind of liked the rose. so decided to paint it in watercolor. Seemed to take a very long time with all the petals and variations of color within each one. I thought it needed a very dark background to set it off. Thanks for taking the time to look.

Today's miniature painting is of a colorful white waterlily. The sun created some wonderful shadow shapes and a delicate rainbow of soft colors on this white waterlily. Painting whites is such an enjoyable experience. I wonder if I'll live long enough to paint all the wonderful sights I fall in love with. I look forward to each attempt and have a great experience, big or small paintings, it doesn't seem to matter. I love doing them.

I was walking along a stream in one of our gorgeous parks one morning and came across this stand of bamboo. I was so attracted to the shapes created by the sunlight and shadows and so compelled to paint the scene afterwards. I didn't include the leafy tops because the stands against the stream were what really attracted my notice in the first place. I also wanted to challenge myself to do the background first without any masking, and what an adventure, direct painting and mixing on the paper and get it all on before it dried. I didn't want any hard edges in the water or the bank. Once the background was very dry I used the same painting method on the stands, branches and leaves, with just a little more for shadows after everything dried. So happy with the results, I'll have to work on more landscape paintings.

I was doing a watercolor demo for a friend this week - she was curious about my methods - so I ended up completing this painting afterwards. We had such a nice time working together we're going to make it a once a week painting session for a little while. As artists we spend a lot of time alone so this will be a nice change of pace.

I just love greens, blues and yellows together. Greens and yellows are especially challenging to work with but life would be a bore if everything came easy. The colors are much better than I can get on the screen, a little warmer and richer.

Stay posted for more paintings soon. I'm working on pieces for a few of my collections and in the near future I'll be posting some alternative media works too.

I finally finished my latest full sheet watercolor painting. This original watercolor painting on 300 lb. paper is a representation of a lovely hybrid Hibiscus created right here in Hawaii. I was fortunate enough to visit the Hibiscus Lady's farm last month and shot many photographs of her Hybrid Hibiscus plants, see her link below. Her primary focus is to create gorgeous colors in the Hibiscus flower and she's doing a fabulous job. She sells plants locally and ships plants to the mainland too.

I wish I could have done some paintings outside at the farm but its just too hot to stand it for long enough. I was broiling under the sun even doing the photos as quickly as I could. I do however get a lot of pleasure from reviewing the photos later and using the good bits from several to get a composition that I want to end up working from. I had lots of watercolor paper scraps around me while doing this one, testing my greens and mauves and purples. I was so pleased with the leaves and the results I got with my background wet into wet turned out better than I expected too. All in all I am enjoying this journey of learning this amazing watercolor medium.

This mask turned out to be my adventure in art this summer.

When I first received it from a friend who was treated for oral cancer, it was white polyurethane with lots of little holes in it. I sprayed it with a primer and then put lively acrylic colors on before adding colorful pieces of collage paper. The sharp contrast in color scheme can be interpreted in many different ways.

I'm working on 2 collections this summer - continuing with my Hibiscus series and now also painting a series representing the Plumeria trees and their wonderful flowers. We are fortunate to have the Plumeria Grove here on the island, with its many trees including some rare species of Plumeria. I spotted this bunch as I was ducking under one of the trees to protect my camera during a rain shower. As the rain shower passed the suns rays peeked through the leaves and branches to give this bunch of blooms a glowing light. I thought it would be fun do do a bunch of flowers rather than the single close ups I normally focus on. Even though the flowers are realistic, the background is abstracted to show them off. The painting is done on 300 lb. paper and it sure means less buckling during the wet in wet portion of the piece. I'm looking forward to doing the next Plumeria, right after I finish another full sheet Hibiscus in progress.

I created this 7.5"x7.5" image using the very old technique of encaustic -- using hot wax. I imbedded colored threads in wax and then fused wax over the top. Using a batik tool I got in Bali, I drew the dark lines on top. The technique is somewhat like watercolor in that you are never sure what you are going to get. Too much heat and the wax disappears! But ii is really fun.

I am starting to explore using my Japanese handmade papers as a background for my cats. This one is done with ink and watercolor and the seal at the bottom reads "Linda" in Chinese. When I looked at this image, it reminded me of a piece of pottery, so I chose to name it Jomon, after the Jomon people in Japan, who created some of the world's oldest pottery vessels.

I just finished this large, full sheet watercolor painting of, you guessed it, another Hibiscus flower. I decided to try the heavier paper, 300lb, and I liked it enough to order more. The paper allowed me to really experiment with washes on the main Hibiscus flower. I still like to do the abstract background though, I think it really is a great support to my main focus. The glazing process takes quite a bit longer than my usual method, but I was excited by the results so I may use the glazing method again for certain subjects. It was an interesting exercise, to retain the flavor of what the client liked, but to incorporate enough changes to make this new painting an original too. I just finished my latest floral art quilt this week. It was inspired by a couple of sketches and watercolor studies I did a while ago. I wanted to focus on the blooms from this interesting tree from the Hibiscus family, so I just showed the leaves by color washes and stitching. I did the painting on high quality cotton using gesso, acrylic paints and artist oil sticks. Then the work really began, hours of stitching to define the details of the flowers and outline leaf shapes in the background. I embellished the piece with glass beads ( see close up below ) and cotton embroidery threads. I also painted the fabric to bind the edges of this art quilt. This kind of art allows me to incorporate my love of textile and paintings. It takes more time to complete than some of my watercolors but I just love the whole experience.

With Boys' Day coming up, I decided to finish the koi painting I had started a while ago. This was my first attempt at painting on Yupo, a synthetic paper similar to plastic. Yupo is a challenge in that you may not overlay paint very easily. Once you put it down, you leave it alone. So you need to get the color right the first time. However, I think it is great for painting water!

Someone from the Hawaii Bar Association saw the koi and asked to publish it on the cover of the Hawaii Bar Journal. I think the lawyer liked the title!

I started this mixed media collage with a piece of discharged black cotton that I experimented with and wondered if I'd ever use. I'm attempting to really be conscious of using and or recycling everything these days - trying to do my part to send less to the landfill. Once I chose a few components and decided on an Asian influence I knew I had to keep it somewhat simple. I used torn images from a magazine, tulle, upholstery samples, rice paper, crepe paper, origami paper, Asian glass beads linen-silk-cotton variegated yarn and some metal thread. I like to work on this type of art once in a while because once you lay down your first or second component you create yourself a set of problems to work your way out of over a few weeks to come up with the end result. I think I'll mount this piece on board and mat and frame it. Just need to determine the right style of frame.

I had an absolutely fantastic time creating this mixed media painted and embellished art work. I dreamed each step of the piece ( memories inspired by a past visit to the Caribbean) and worked on it in stages. I started by painting with Artist Acrylic paints on fabric and went on from there. Many components went into this painting on fabric along with some interesting sections created with the use of a heat gun and a candle. I also hand designed and painted the fabric I made the attached large beads from. I used high quality glass beads in some areas too - aqua silver lined glass beads and gorgeous multicolored glass bugle beads. Most of the stitched sections are done with an aqua or sea green metallic thread. Gesso, felt and acrylic paints were utilized to create the interesting add on shapes. You'll see from the next photo that the edges are finished by burning, it seemed like the right finish to complete this piece. Some may consider this an art quilt, but I just look at everything I do as art and will use whatever materials bring my project to life.

Yeah!!!!! I can finally post again. I was without internet service for 2 weeks; talk about net withdrawal. I switched providers so hopefully I'll be on track for a while. I missed blogging.

This is my newest floral watercolor painting. I was in the mood for corals and of course it had to be an hibiscus flower. I kept the background as abstract as possible to highlight the flower. I love the contrast between the corals and reds of the blossom against the green and blue background. I did not use any mask for this painting, just carefully painted around the areas I wanted to leave white. Enjoy the day!

This small painting, AIR, was done with a very limited palette mixture in one session. The challenge to create movement by starting at the focal point and working your way around and back to the focal point was suggested by one of the instructors where I attended a summer class last year. It may seem simple to do, but it is not. Once you make your first brush stroke, each following one must be well thought out and then executed before your paint starts to dry. Even here in Hawaii the winter blahs can get on the nerves. We've had rain almost every day since early December. To inspire some cheer I decided to paint a cheerful flower. Doesn't it just light up the day? I wanted this watercolor painting to be a little on the impressionist side so the colors are mainly charged into wetted areas with the deeper shadows added in a second charged in layer. The background is a very rich mixture of charged in colors that combined to make an abstract background.

This is the second small acrylic study done with knife, brush and stick in different colors with the mixing done on the canvas rather than the palette. We had our first winter storm last night with lots of thunder and lightning, so this small painting reflects that for me. Luckily I did not hear any reports of major flooding with this one, that can be a big problem here in Hawaii. No snow to contend with but water can sure do some major damage. So just the light show along with the wind and rain for now.

This week I'm working on abstract studies. Today's is the first of three small acrylic studies I painted using knife , brush and a stick. You really have to let your imagination work for you, although you do consider each mark you make as you go along. The first mark can be random, but those that follow must have a purpose. I enjoy working on the problems of painting in this style. For me sometimes, it really encourages a lot more thinking about the next step than representational painting does.

Lately I've renewed my love for black and white art and photography, and interestingly enough one of the group art blogs I belong to posted a challenge for November - create a piece in black and white with one color object. This is a challenge made to order for me, it brought back so many memories of the hours I spent drawing with graphite and or pen and ink when I was a teen. This picture was very time consuming but absolutely a labor of love.

First I played with some of my photos from Ho'omaluhia Gardens, here in Hawaii and came up with this composition. Next I did a very loose outline of the major shapes, lightly toned a few areas with graphite saving my whites and then just focused on shape and value. The piece is really done in a more classic style with many layers built up to get the deeper values. I used a little conte to get some of the darks and of course a variety of artist colors to do the seed pods.

The Dillenia plant originates from tropical rain forests mainly in Asia. It has a lovely yellow bloom that precedes the pods. I thought the pods were so interesting though, that I wanted to portray them rather than the flower.

The Ti leaf, especially the red ones really interest me. There are so many color variations in the leaves depending on the light they are in at certain times of the day. I decided to experiment with something similar, but also a little different from the watercolor on paper I did a few weeks ago. This one is done on cloth using liquid acrylics. I used a soy wax resist with 3 layers to complete. I love the more impressionistic result that I ended up with.

This painting took quite a bit of time to complete, there are just so many petals. I started with a pale wash, reserving the whites and then did some wet into wet with mingling colors and followed up with some wet on dry. I enjoyed the challenge of mixing the lovely grays in some areas of the painting.

My continuing romance with the Hibiscus flower has inspired this painting. I found this lovely double Hibiscus while at one of the Botanical Gardens on the Big Island last year.
